Vladimir Putin is the current President of the Russian Federation. Putin first came to power in 2000 and has since been re-elected three times. Under Putin’s tenure, Russia has experienced a resurgence in its economy and influence in international affairs, leading to his reputation as a strong leader both domestically and on the world stage.
Putin has held a number of prominent positions in the Russian government prior to becoming President. He served in the KGB before rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. During the 1990s, he held several high-level positions in the Russian government, including the office of the Prime Minister under Russian President Boris Yeltsin.
During his time in office, Putin has pursued an ambitious agenda to control the media and limit the power of opposition parties. He also supports conservative social policies, such as limiting access to abortion and increasing public funding for the Orthodox Church. Putin has sought to increase Russia’s role as an international actor and has sought to cultivate relationships with countries like China and Iran.
Despite continuing criticism of his increasingly autocratic tendencies, Putin has remained popular in Russia. He is often credited with keeping Russia stable throughout a period of political and economic turbulence, as well as increasing its international influence. Putin is expected to stay in office until 2024 under the current term limits.
