The current Secretary of State is Antony J. Blinken, who was officially sworn in on February 2, 2021. He was nominated to the position by President Joe Biden on December 1, 2020.
A native of New York City, Blinken has held a number of high-level positions throughout his career. Immediately prior to taking the office of Secretary of State, he was President Biden’s Deputy National Security Advisor. From 2015 to 2017, he was Vice President Biden’s Deputy National Security Advisor.
Before that, he was Deputy Secretary of State under President Obama from 2015 to 2017, and Deputy National Security Advisor to the President, as well as Deputy Secretary of State for Strategic Planning, and Deputy Assistant to the President and National Security Council Senior Director for Strategic Planning.
Blinken is a graduate of Harvard College and Columbia Law School. His career in public service has included working as the Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs and as special presidential envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter ISIL, among other roles.
Blinken has served as a member of the State Department’s Policy Planning staff, in senior positions in the Department of Defense, and in the Senate as a foreign policy advisor to then-Senator Joe Biden. He has also served in positions at the White House, the National Security Council, and the Council on Foreign Relations.
