The Surgeon General is a military doctor, responsible for leading the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and also serving as America’s leading spokesperson on matters of public health. The role of the Surgeon General is to protect, promote, and advance the health and safety of the United States.
The current Surgeon General is Vice Admiral Jerome Adams, M.D., M.P.H. Dr. Adams was appointed to the position in 2017 by President Donald J. Trump. He is the 20th Surgeon General of the United States.
The Surgeon General’s responsibilities include being the face of public health for the nation, working to reduce health disparities and promoting public awareness of different public health topics. He also serves as an advisor to the President, Secretary of Health and Human Services, or any other PHS officers regarding public health matters.
The Surgeon General serves as a leader in promoting wellness and physical activity, informing Americans of scientific advancements in public health, helping to eliminate health disparities, and encouraging healthy behaviors throughout the U.S.
In addition to the core responsibilities, the Surgeon General is the head of a federal agency known as the Office of the Surgeon General, which is responsible for providing the public with reliable information related to health and public health. The Office also oversees the activities of the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, a group of highly trained, dedicated professionals who serve on the frontlines of public health and help promote health and safety all over the world.
The Surgeon General is an important part of the nation’s public health system and a key advisor to the President on health and safety concerns. His work ultimately helps enhance the quality of life for all Americans.
