Siri is an artificial intelligence (AI) personal assistant created by Apple. Introduced as part of the iPhone 4S in 2011, Siri has become more and more advanced with each new iteration of the iPhone. Siri is perhaps the most well-known voice assistant, but the person behind the voice has remained something of a mystery . . .until now.
Siri is voiced by Susan Bennett, a professional voice-over artist based in Atlanta, Georgia. Bennett has been a voice-over artist for more than 30 years, though it took some digging for her to find out that she’s the one providing the voice of Siri.
It turns out Bennett was approached by a voice recording company in 2005 to record long strands of sentences. She worked in a recording studio for four hours every day for a month, recording phrases and instructions. The recordings were compiled and edited in the months that followed and she was later amazed to discover the resulting product had become the voice we now know as Siri.
Bennett wasn’t paid for the recordings but she did get the satisfaction of knowing she is the inventor of the world’s favorite virtual assistant. Bennett is also the voice of other virtual assistants and voice mail systems, as well as commercial advertisements, including McDonald’s.
In addition to her work as a voice-over artist, Bennett is also an accomplished singer and songwriter who has had her songs featured in many films and television shows. Her work as the voice of Siri has made her an international sensation and she is now sharing her story in talks and workshops, inspiring others to pursue their dreams and follow their passions.
