Who Is The Zodiac Killer

The Zodiac Killer is one of the most notorious serial killers in American history. He is believed to have murdered at least five people in northern California in the late 1960s and early 1970s, with possibly up to 37 victims in total. His true identity remains a mystery to this day despite an exhaustive investigation by law enforcement.

The earliest confirmed murders were those of teenager David Ferrin and college student Cecelia Shepard in Vallejo on December 20th, 1968. Over the next year and a half, there were four more confirmed murders and two attempted murders, all in California’s Bay Area. In addition to the confirmed murders, other unsolved homicides have been attributed to him.

The Zodiac was especially known for taunting the police and media with letters and cards in which he claimed responsibility for the murders. He often made references to an alleged "symbol" related to astrology, hence his nickname "Zodiac". Despite the astronomical references, his true identity and motives remain unknown.

In the decades since his last victim was found in 1969, there have been hundreds of theories and suspects, some of which have been debunked and some which remain unverified. In 1971, the San Francisco Police Department believed they had identified the Zodiac Killer based on handwriting, but the suspect was never arrested or charged. In 2019, investigators submitted DNA evidence to a laboratory for analysis, with inconclusive results.

Although his identity remains a mystery, the Zodiac Killer continues to fascinate true crime enthusiasts and loom large in the public imagination. His twelve known victims, their families and friends will never have closure, though the case will remain open until his identity is revealed. For now, the Zodiac Killer remains one of the world’s most enduring unsolved mysteries.
