Yahweh is a name for God in the Hebrew Bible, derived from a Hebrew verb meaning ‘to be, to exist’. It appears over 6,800 times in the scriptures and has become a popular name for God in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
Yahweh originates from an ancient and unknown name for God, the “tetragrammaton,” or four letters. Its first use appears around the 9th century BC. It is the oldest name for God in the Old Testament and occurs in every book of the Hebrew Bible except for Esther.
The name is significant because it is thought to reflect the idea that God is self-existent and has always been present. It can also be translated to mean “he who creates” or “he who brings into existence it what did not previously exist.”
In Jewish tradition, the name Yahweh is so sacred that it is rarely spoken aloud. Instead, when referring to God, people substitute a less specific name, such as Adonai, meaning “my Master.”
The name Yahweh is also connected to the biblical covenant God makes with his people, unconditional and everlasting, and so is a reminder of God’s faithfulness and love.
While different interpretations of the name and its meaning exist, it is generally agreed upon that Yahweh is a powerful, loving, and Divine Being who created the world and remains present in our lives today.
