Young Dolph is an American rapper from Memphis, Tennessee. He is best known for his rap style which is often melodic and catchy. He has released several mixtapes and albums, with his most successful project being 2018’s Role Model.
Born Adolph Thornton Jr. in 1985, Young Dolph grew up in a household with eight siblings. Early on, he developed a love for rap music and was quickly inspired by icons like Master P, Tupac, and Biggie Smalls.
Before becoming a rapper, Dolph had a rough upbringing. Through his teen years and into adulthood, Dolph had to provide for his family by selling drugs. In true rap fashion, the experience proved to be one of his greatest motivators. His 2014 track “Preach” recounts his life living “in and out of trap houses” and hustling to take care of his family.
Young Dolph’s music career officially began in 2008 with the release of his first mixtape, Paper Route Campaign. From there, he independently released nine more mixtapes and four studio albums. His discography reflects his hard rap style, but also shows off his sense of melodic hooks.
Young Dolph has become a big name in the rap industry, collaborating with the likes of Gucci Mane, Juicy J, and Wiz Khalifa. In 2016, he was named to Forbes’ Hip Hop’s Cash Prince’s List.
In 2017, Young Dolph was the victim of a shooting in Charlotte, North Carolina. Luckily, no one was seriously injured and the rapper survived. His newfound notoriety, fortuitously due to the incident, led to his 2018 album Role Model debuting at #26 on the Billboard 200. This would go on to become one of his most successful projects to date.
Now 35, Young Dolph is taking steps into the mainstream, gracing the cover of XXL and appearing on late night talk shows. He’s even appeared in a few films and documentaries.
Whether praising Memphis or detailing his hardscrabble life, Young Dolph is a modern day rapper with a story of hustle in rap’s epicenter. He’s a product of a city with a rich hip hop history and is doing his part to make it proud.
