Smalls?
On March 9, 1997, hip hop artist Biggie Smalls (aka Christopher Wallace, AKA The Notorious B.I.G.) was murdered in a still unsolved drive-by shooting in Los Angeles. Although the murder has remained unsolved for over twenty years, theories have abounded as to who was the one who killed Biggie Smalls.
The LAPD investigation pointed to an ongoing feud between East Coast and West Coast hip hop artists that began in the early 1990s. The feud revolved around the relationship between Death Row Records, run by Suge Knight and Tupac Shakur, and Bad Boy Records, run by Sean Combs (also known as Puffy or P.Diddy). It has been theorized that Biggie’s death was a result of retaliation by the West Coast artists against East Coast artists.
Another theory suggests that Suge Knight was directly involved in the shooting, although this is disputed. In recent years, court documents acquired by the LA Times suggest that Suge Knight and his friend end up hiring someone to kill Biggie in retaliation for the killing of Tupac, although this too is unproven and disputed.
The most compelling theory to date, though, relates to former LAPD officer and Marion "Suge" Knight’s ex-security guard, David Mack. According to this theory, Mack was hired by Knight to assassinate Biggie in the drive-by shooting. It has been theorized that Mack may have had a personal grudge against Biggie, as it has been suggested that Biggie may have been involved in the attempted murder of Mack in 1996.
To this day, the question of who killed Biggie Smalls remains unanswered. No one has ever been charged or indicted for Biggie’s murder, and the investigation by the LAPD remains open. As the evidence and theories continue to accumulate, perhaps one day the mystery of who was behind Biggie’s murder will finally be revealed.
