Like many mysteries in the DC Comics universe, the answer to the question of who killed Bruce Wayne’s parents has gone through many changes over the years.
At first, it was Joe Chill. In the original Batman comic book story from 1939, Joe Chill was a small-time crook deliberately sent to Wayne Manor by mob boss Lew Moxon. He saw Bruce Wayne walking with his parents and seized the opportunity to rob them. During the confrontation, a shot went off and the Waynes were killed.
Later versions of this story focused on Joe Chill and his relationship with the mafia. In a 2005 comic book story, Moxon framed Chill and made a deal with corrupt politician Rupert Thorne to have Chill executed for the murder of Bruce Wayne’s parents.
In more recent stories, Joe Chill as the killer has been completely forgotten and replaced by a variety of other villains. In 2013’s Batman: Zero Year, a massive storm called the Dark City floods Gotham City, turning it into a lawless wasteland. In this version, Bruce Wayne’s parents are killed by an anarchist group called the Red Hood Gang, who specifically targeted Thomas and Martha Wayne because of the power and influence they had.
The Who Killed Bruce Wayne’s Parents story has changed enough times that it’s unlikely we’ll ever know the definitive answer. But one thing’s for sure: Joe Chill will forever be remembered as the first suspect in this enduring mystery.
