On July 22, 1994, convicted serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer was beaten to death while serving a sentence of 15 consecutive life terms at the Columbia Correctional Institution in Portage, Wisconsin.
Dahmer, who murdered 17 young men and boys between 1978 and 1991, was alone in a prison gym when he was reportedly approached, cornered, and then attacked by another inmate, Christopher Scarver. According to witnesses, Scarver repeatedly struck Dahmer in the head and face with a 20-inch metal bar until he was rendered unconscious. Although Dahmer died shortly thereafter, the source of his death was officially listed as a combination of head injuries and heart failure.
The motive behind Scarver’s assault remains a mystery. Several theories exist as to why Scarver targeted Dahmer, but none of them have been conclusively proven. It has been suggested that Scarver was angered by Dahmer’s habit of collecting items from the prison cafeteria such as ketchup packets, sugar, and coffee creamer, which he used to create "fantasy meals" in his cell. Other reports suggest that the attack was motivated by Scarver’s hatred of Dahmer’s crimes, which had been the subject of intense media attention when he was first arrested.
Whatever the reason for the attack, it was clear that Dahmer’s life had come to an end. His death was a shock to many of his former victims’ families, who felt both anger and sorrow at the thought of their loved ones’ murderer being allowed to live while they suffered his heinous crimes.
In the end, although Jeffrey Dahmer was ultimately responsible for his own actions and the awful suffering he inflicted on others, it was Christopher Scarver who ended his life that day in the prison gym.
