Movie
Nick Brewer, the lead character in the 2018 Netflix original movie Clickbait, is brutally murdered in the film’s mysterious finale. But who killed him?
The movie, directed by Steven Arentez and starring Brandon McMahon, follows Nick’s life as a college student trying to navigate the digital world of clickbait content. After creating a viral cat meme, he soon discovers the dark world of internet fame, where articles can change lives, but also provoke danger.
Throughout the movie we see how Nick is besieged by competitors and “haters”, seemingly intent on derailing his online success. Ultimately though, it is his own choices that lead to his ultimate demise.
The film doesn’t overtly reveal the culprit behind Nick’s death, instead leaving viewers to come to their own conclusions. One popular theory is that it was Nick’s friend, Christopher, who killed him. Christopher had grown jealous of Nick’s success and angered when he found out Nick had betrayed him to get higher ratings. Alternatively, some believe it is Nick’s creepy landlord, Silas, who murdered him. Silas has a suspicious interest in Nick’s social media content, as well as a criminal past, so it wouldn’t be too much of a reach to think he would try to kill Nick.
Ultimately, the answer might be Nick himself. He falls down an increasingly perilous life path as he gets deeper in the clickbait game, culminating in his own self-destruction.
Whether the culprit is Christopher, Silas, or Nick himself, Clickbait presents a thought-provoking message about the harsh reality of online fame. Nick Brewer’s untimely death serves as a reminder to be aware of the consequences of clicks and likes.
