On February 19th, 2020, Pop Smoke, the breakout 19-year-old Brooklyn rapper, was fatally shot in a tragic home invasion. The shooting took place in a Hollywood Hills home rented out by his team and his killers remain unknown. Within a few weeks of the incident, two suspects were taken into custody and were subsequently released due to lack of evidence.
Pop Smoke had established himself as a rising star in rap in just a few short years, garnering co-signs from prominent artists such as Drake, Nicki Minaj and 50 Cent. His death left a major void in the SoundCloud rap community but opened up a police investigation looking to uncover the truth surrounding his killing.
Pop Smoke’s death has been linked to a culture of gang violence present in Los Angeles. There has yet to be any conclusive proof that the shooting was gang related, however, and it is still unknown what the motive behind the crime was.
The police and the Los Angeles District Attorney have yet to come forward with any information on the case. The only evidence publicly available consists of surveillance photos of four individuals taken from a home security system. In October of 2020, four additional suspects were arrested for participating in the crime, all of whom are now in police custody, making the total number of suspects arrested in the case eight.
The case still remains open and Pop Smoke’s killers have yet to be found. Until then, speculation remains surrounding who killed Pop Smoke and why they decided to take away one of rap’s most shining stars.
