Simon Fitzharris, one of the main characters in the YA mystery novel One of Us Is Lying, was a classmate of the other main characters, five high school seniors known as the group of Four who attend Bayview High School in Northern California. He was a loner who kept to himself and made it clear to the group of Four that he wanted nothing to do with them, as evidenced by his refusal to join their regular lunch table at school.
One day, Simon is found dead in the school cafeteria and the group of Four is deemed the suspects. As the investigation into his murder unfolds, each member of the group of Four has a different version of events, leading the reader to question who is telling the truth and who is guilty of killing Simon.
In the end, it was revealed that Simon’s death was not caused by the group of Four, but by Simon himself. He had deliberately overdosed on pills he had taken from the school nurse, in a desperate attempt to make himself invisible to his classmates and free himself from the pressures of society.
The mystery surrounding Simon’s death serves as a reminder to readers that life will always have its highs and lows, and no one is ever truly alone. His story demonstrates how we can find strength and hope even in the darkest of times, and how our actions can affect the lives of others.
