for Films
When you turn on your TV and watch a movie or television show, you may not think about the process that goes into producing a scene with props. Prop guns, or weapons without a firing mechanism, are a critical element of a convincing film. Whether the movie is a Western, a war drama, or a crime thriller, a prop master will be on set to make sure guns are loaded safely and look appropriate for each scene.
To prepare for a scene that requires the use of prop guns, the prop master will meet with the director to discuss the look the film is trying to achieve. They will determine what type of props will be needed and which specific models will work best for each scene. Once the weapons are selected, it is the job of the prop master to prepare them so they can safely be handled during production. This can involve disassembling and assembling the gun, as well as making sure all the parts are in perfect condition, since even a loose screw or blunt edge can stop production.
Once the guns have been prepared, it is up to the prop master to carefully load them for the scene. Different scenes require different ammunition and the prop master needs to have a strict protocol for loading the guns depending on the genre of the film and the scene being filmed. Bullets and firearm blanks are inserted one at a time, taking great care with each shot, until the gun is fully loaded and ready to be used in the scene.
Finally, the prop master needs to take precautions while filming to make sure that no one is injured. During scenes with firing weapons, the prop master will monitor the distance between the actors and the guns, and will oversee the set to make sure that blanks in guns do not cause harm.
The job of a prop master might not be glamorous, but they are essential in making sure that each scene with a gun is realistic and safe. Without them, scenes with prop guns wouldn’t be believable, or worse, could become dangerous.
