The Grand Wagoneer is a full-size luxury SUV that was produced by American automobile manufacturer Chrysler Corporation from 1984 to 1991. It was the first four-door SUV produced by an American automaker and is considered to be the predecessor to the modern full-sized SUV. At the time, it was one of the most expensive and luxurious SUVs ever made.
The Grand Wagoneer was produced by AMC (American Motors Corporation), which was later purchased by Chrysler Corporation in 1987. The vehicle was developed by AMC’s Chief Designer Richard Teague and was based on the Jeep Wagoneer. It was initially marketed as the Jeep Grand Wagoneer and was powered by a 5.9 L AMC V8 engine. The Grand Wagoneer featured a variety of luxury features such as leather upholstery and wood paneling.
The Grand Wagoneer was built upon a fully-boxed frame, making it very robust and capable off-road. The vehicles were available in two- and four-door configurations and featured a variety of suspensions and engines, including turbocharged and fuel-injected variants. By 1991, the Grand Wagoneer was equipped with a 5.9 liter V8 engine that produced 250 horsepower.
The Grand Wagoneer was discontinued in 1991 due to the public’s shift away from gas guzzling luxury SUVs and the introduction of Chrysler’s minivans. But, with the recent introduction of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Grand Wagoneer has made its return. Jeep reintroduced the Grand Wagoneer in 2021 as a limited-edition model with plush leather upholstery, wood paneling, and modern features such as a 12-inch infotainment display, active noise cancellation, and a three-row seating capacity.
The Jeep Grand Wagoneer is one of the most iconic and sought-after SUVs ever built. It is an American masterpiece created by AMC and built by Chrysler and is an American symbol of luxury and refinement. For those looking for an American made and engineered luxury SUV, the Grand Wagoneer is definitely a vehicle worth considering.
