Kia Motors, based in Seoul, South Korea, is the international company behind the popular vehicles like the Kia Soul, Kia Stinger and Kia Sportage. Kia is the second largest automobile manufacturer in South Korea, with 28% of the domestic market share and is currently one of the fastest growing automakers in the world.
Kia was founded in Seoul in 1944 as a manufacturer of steel tubing and bicycle parts. In the 1950s, the company moved into the automobile sector, producing its first model, the Kia Brisa, in 1952. Kia evolved over the decades and eventually began export operations in the late 1970s. At that point, the company was renamed Kia Motors and focused on manufacturing commercial vehicles.
Kia continued to grow and in the 1990s entered into a major joint venture with Ford Motor Company. Under the agreement, Kia began producing vehicles for Ford’s North American market, further enhancing Kia’s global profile.
Since then, Kia has continued to expand, with production facilities sprinkled all over the world, from Russia and China to India, Mexico, Slovakia and the United States. In the United States, Kia opened its first U.S. assembly plant in Georgia in 2009 and continues to be one of the top selling brands in the U.S.
Today, Kia vehicles continue to be designed, developed, and produced in South Korea, designed to meet international safety standards. Kia is still considered a convenient, quality and value-sensitive brand and is one of the most recognizable and internationally renowned automakers from Asia.
