“Who Moved My Cheese?” is a business parable by Dr. Spencer Johnson, co-author of the international bestseller The One Minute Manager. Written in 1998, it has become an enduring business classic, selling over 26 million copies in 37 languages.
The story follows two mice, Sniff and Scurry, and two little people, Hem and Haw, in their search for cheese. It’s a metaphor for change and the need to be able to quickly adapt to new situations or risk being left behind.
The story revolves around the idea of being open to change. The characters face a situation in which their cheese (their goals or the things that make them happy) has been taken away from them. They must either courageously search for it and accept the change or risk becoming complacent, believing things will stay the same.
The story’s message is that change is certain and impossible to avoid. The only real question is how one will respond and adapt to it. The characters in the story all reach their own conclusions, with Sniff and Scurry embracing the change and quickly finding new cheese, and Hem and Haw being slower to accept it and thus slower to find it.
“Who Moved My Cheese?” is a reminder that change is inevitable and can be hard to cope with, but ultimately, embracing it and adapting to new situations is key to achieving long-term success.
