Alfa Romeo is an iconic Italian brand that has been in existence since the early 1900s. The company takes its name from its founder, Alexandre Darracq, and the letters "A-L-F-A." Since its inception, Alfa Romeo has produced some of the world’s most iconic sports cars, including the Alfa Romeo Giulia and the Alfa Romeo 4C.
In 1908, Alexandre Darracq formed "[SocietĂ ] Anonima Italiana Darracq" (SAID), the original precursor of Alfa Romeo. SAID produced cars, trucks and various pieces of machinery for over the next decade. In 1910, the company changed its name to "Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili," which is where the acronym ALFA comes from. By 1920, ALFA was producing its popular autos and had become one of the most successful automakers in Europe.
In 1986, Alfa Romeo was purchased by Fiat SpA, an Italian car manufacturer. After the purchase, the company took on the name "Alfa Romeo SpA." At the time, only the brand and certain models were acquired, while a portion of the company’s components and services were retained by SAID. As a result, a complex network of joint-ventures and sub-contracting companies were set up to handle Alfa Romeo production.
Today, Alfa Romeo is owned by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, the largest car maker in Italy. Of the two companies, Alfa Romeo is the primary corporate brand, and is responsible for the manufacturing of a number of vehicles. The company still produces beautiful, performance-oriented cars and continues to be a leader in Italian automotive technology.
