AT&T is a telecommunications giant which provides landline and wireless phone, internet and cable services. The company was founded in 1885 by Alexander Graham Bell and his partners, who founded the original Bell Telephone Company. AT&T went public in 1984 and currently has over 200 million access lines.
Today, AT&T is owned by two main groups: institutional shareholders and individual shareholders. Institutional investors include mutual funds, pension funds, and private equity funds. As of May 2021, the largest institutional investors in AT&T are Vanguard Group, Blackrock, State Street Corporation, JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Bank of New York Mellon Corporation.
Overall, individual shareholders, such as employees and members of the public, own approximately 28% of AT&T’s stock. Large individual shareholders include Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway holding company, which owns 8% of AT&T shares. Additionally, AT&T itself holds about 10% of the company’s common stock.
AT&T is America’s largest telecommunications provider and is an S&P 500 component. The company’s stock is listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol "T". AT&T’s shares have a market capitalization of approximately $202 billion.
