CBS Corporation is an American mass media and entertainment company that owns and operates the legendary CBS television network and its sister stations, along with many of the most popular cable networks and radio networks. The company was founded in 1986 as CBS Broadcasting Inc., and was later rebranded in 1997 as CBS Corporation.
CBS Corporation is owned by National Amusements, Inc, a theater holding company that is controlled by the Redstone family. National Amusements is the majority owner of both CBS Corporation and Viacom. The two media conglomerates have been tied together since 1999 when National Amusements chairman Sumner Redstone worked out a deal to merge Viacom and CBS.
Under the Redstone family’s ownership, CBS Corporation is the world’s fourth-largest media conglomerate. In addition to its presence in the United States, CBS Corporation has operations in Australia, the United Kingdom, Latin America, Mexico, and Canada. The company also owns many of the most popular cable networks in these regions, including Showtime, The Smithsonian Channel, and The CW.
The Redstone family has held a stake in CBS Corporation since it was first created, and they currently hold a majority of voting shares. As such, they are the ultimate owners of CBS Corporation, with Sumner Redstone’s daughter Shari Redstone serving as Chairman of the Board of Directors. National Amusements also owns stakes in several of CBS Corporation’s major competitors, including 21st Century Fox, NBC Universal, Time Warner, The Walt Disney Company, and Viacom.
