Comcast Corporation is a telecommunications conglomerate based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1963, the company has a diversified portfolio of cable networks, television, radio, and film studios, voice, and broadband Internet services, and more. As of 2020, Comcast is the largest pay-television provider, the largest cable provider in the United States and one of the world’s largest media companies. As such, the company and its subsidiaries are responsible for some of the most recognizable and popular consumer brands in the world.
Comcast is owned by the Roberts family and was founded by Ralph J. Roberts, who purchased a rural cable television system in Tupelo, Mississippi. The company was later joined by his sons, Brian and Craig Roberts.
Brian, now the CEO of the company, has been credited with greatly expanding their reach and was recently named one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People. He also founded and serves on the Board of Directors of the Comcast Corporation Foundation and Comcast Spectacor LLC, as well as serving as executive chairman of the company since 2011.
Comcast also owns NBCUniversal Media, which is a media conglomerate with a number of assets, including the NBC television network, Universal Pictures, and Universal TV, a portfolio of cable channels including USA Network, Syfy, E!, the Golf Channel, and more. The company also owns Sky, a major European TV and Internet provider, as well as Telemundo, the second-largest Spanish-language broadcast network in the United States.
Comcast’s ownership of NBCUniversal provided them with a valuable platform to launch their streaming video platform, Peacock. The service boasts a library of original and acquired content, as well as access to the entire Netflix library and exclusive shows, such as The Office, available only on the platform.
The company also owns the majority of shares in online video streaming platform, Hulu. The service is complemented by the corporation’s Xfinity cable service, making it one of the largest streaming services in the world.
Comcast’s primary focus is in the United States, where it provides a variety of services, be it cable TV, broadband, or telephone services. However, it has had success in other countries, such as the United Kingdom, where it is the third largest paid provider of TV services.
Comcast is one of the largest companies in the U.S. and, with the help of its subsidiaries and holdings, it continues to grow and diversify its business to keep up with the ever-changing needs of modern consumers. The Roberts family still owns a substantial stake in the company, but has since taken Comcast public. These days, the company is traded on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol CMCSA.
