Ferrari is an iconic Italian luxury sports car manufacturer, founded in 1929 by Enzo Ferrari and based in Maranello, Italy. As one of the most well-known and sought after brands of automobiles in the world, the question of who actually owns Ferrari is an interesting one, and not one that has a single, straightforward answer.
The core company, Ferrari S.p.A., is owned by the Italian automotive company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. (FCA). FCA bought out 90% of the company from Italian investment group Fiat Group in 2016, and the remaining 10% is owned by Piero Ferrari, Enzo Ferrari’s son.
In addition to FCA, the other major stakeholder in Ferrari is Exor N.V., a Dutch-based investment firm. It holds an 8.8% share of the company and is controlled by the Agnelli family, owners of the Fiat Group. They have been major investors in German luxury car maker Porsche since 2009.
The remaining shareholders in Ferrari are a mix of international institutional investors, Ferrari’s employees, and the public. As of February 2019, the public holds a 22.3% stake in Ferrari, although the stock is not available on any American or European exchanges.
In conclusion, Ferrari is ultimately owned by a mix of institutions, private individuals and the public, but ultimately controlled by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and its parent company, Exor N.V. The company remains a leader in the development and production of luxury sports cars, and continues to be held in high regard by the automotive world.
