Chrysler Automobile
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is an Italian-American automotive conglomerate and parent company of the Fiat and Chrysler brands. Formed in 2014 through a merger of Fiat and Chrysler, FCA is based in Amsterdam and listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The company is majority-owned by Exor N.V., a holding company controlled by members of the Agnelli family, which is the same family that founded and previously controlled Fiat.
The merger between Fiat and Chrysler came about after Fiat purchased a 20% stake in Chrysler, which had entered bankruptcy in 2009 and was then majority-owned by U.S. government-backed entities. Eventually, Fiat increased its stake to 58.5%, eventually purchasing all of Chrysler. This, coupled with the fact that the Agnelli family had long been prominent figures in the Italian automotive industry, established FCA as a player in the world’s largest auto market.
Exor, which is controlled by the Agnelli family, owns a controlling 52.2% stake in FCA. However, despite the Agnelli family’s long-standing involvement with the company, its ownership is still shared between a few other major partners. In 2019, Exor sold 10% of its stake in FCA to the coupondealer PSA Group (now Stellantis) for 3.2 billion euros. This move made PSA the second-largest shareholder in FCA behind Exor.
In addition to PSA, a few other major shareholders in FCA includes: Chinese automobile company, Great Wall Motors (6.1%), Chinese auto maker, Geely International (6.2%), Qatar Investment Authority (5.5%), and U.S. private equity firm, KKR (5.5%). There are also several smaller shareholders who own minor stakes in the company.
Overall, FCA is majority-owned by the Agnelli family’s Exor holding company. However, due to the various moves made by FCA and its key stakeholders, in particular the acquisition by PSA, the company’s ownership is now shared among a handful of other major international investors as well.
