Genesis Motor is a luxury vehicle marque owned by South Korean automobile maker, Hyundai Motor Company. The first Genesis branded vehicle was the Genesis G90, which was introduced in 2016. As of 2020, Genesis offerings include the mid-size G80 sedan, full-size G90 sedan, entry-level G70 sedan, and the GV80 SUV.
Hyundai first announced plans to launch Genesis in November 2015 as an independent and separate luxury brand. The company described the move as a “premiumization strategy” and a chance to better compete with established automotive luxury marques like BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi. Hyundai has been slowly rolling out the Genesis brand in the United States and other markets.
The Genesis brand is the second brand under the Hyundai Motor Company umbrella, along with Hyundai. Both the Genesis and Hyundai brands share the same showrooms in the United States, though customers are more likely to find more luxury-level vehicles at a showroom with the Genesis brand.
With the launch of Genesis, Hyundai has committed to a future of advanced powertrain and vehicle technology, as well as an even higher level of luxury and driver experience. The company has invested billions of dollars into the brand and has stated that Genesis will be a brand that stands out from traditional luxury automakers.
Hyundai Motor Company continues to be the sole owner of the Genesis brand. The company has committed to making the brand a strong presence in the luxury market, and so far, Genesis sales are expected to reach 32,000 units in 2020. With Hyundai’s continuing support, it’s likely that Genesis will become a strong competitor in the global luxury market.
