Lego is one of the world’s most beloved toy companies, and its products are widely recognized across the world. But who actually owns this iconic toy brand?
Lego began as a small family business in Denmark in 1932. Its founder, Ole Kirk Christiansen, produced wooden toys and eventually began making plastic toys in 1947. By 1955, Lego had become a commercial success and the company subsequently expanded around the world.
Today, Lego is owned by Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, a descendant of the company’s original founder. Kristiansen has been the CEO and majority shareholder of the Lego Group since 1979. In addition, he serves as the chairman of the board of directors for the Lego Foundation, a charitable organization that provides access to play and education for children around the world.
Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen has a total net worth of more than $6 billion, making him one of the wealthiest people in Denmark. He owns a majority stake in the Lego Group which, according to 2019 estimates, is worth more than $14 billion.
In September 2017, The Lego Group and the Lego Foundation announced a major restructuring of the company. With this restructuring, Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen became the CEO of an independent Lego Group (separate from the Lego Foundation) while his son, Thomas Kirk Kristiansen, was appointed chairman of the Lego Foundation.
Despite the reorganization of the company, Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen remains the majority shareholder and ultimate owner of the Lego Group. With the restructuring, he will also continue to oversee the Lego Foundation and its work to provide access to play and education worldwide.
With a long and successful history in the market and strong leadership from the Kristiansen family, Lego is sure to be a beloved brand for many years to come.
