NBCUniversal is one of the world’s largest media and entertainment companies, with operations in broadcast and cable television, feature films, theme parks, and digital media. It is a subsidiary of the global media company Comcast.
Comcast acquired NBCUniversal in 2011 when it bought a majority stake in NBCUniversal from General Electric (GE). In 2013, Comcast completed its purchase of the remaining 49% stake held by GE.
On February 12, 2014, Comcast Corporation announced it would establish a new corporate entity known as NBCUniversal LLC, to hold the assets of NBCUniversal. On January 28, 2016, Comcast announced it had completed the majority purchase of NBCUniversal, buying GE’s remaining stake.
NBCUniversal consists of the Universal Pictures movie studio, NBC television network and its local broadcast affiliates, the USA Network cable channel, and the Universal Studios theme parks in California and Florida. NBCUniversal also has ownership stakes in the online streaming service Hulu and shares of the Canadian media company Corus Entertainment. It also has a controlling interest in DreamWorks Animation and a 51% stake in the television production company Carnival Films.
Under the terms of the purchase agreement, Comcast holds the majority of the voting power in NBCUniversal. The company’s board of directors is composed of both Comcast and NBCUniversal executive officers.The company is leaded by NBCUniversal’s CEO Jeff Shell from Philadelphia headquarters.
NBCUniversal’s total annual sales in 2019 were 30 billion dollars. It is projected that the company’s annual revenue is expected to reach a record of 34 billion dollars in 2020.
