Papa John’s Pizza is one of the most popular pizza chains in the world, but who actually owns Papa John’s?
John Schnatter, who founded the company in 1984, is the major owner and CEO of Papa John’s. Schnatter owns about 33% of the company, according to financial documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. He has a net worth of around $500 million as of 2020. Papa John’s also has a handful of other corporate investors, including Ballantyne Strong Inc. and Trian Fund Management LP, that own a combined 27% of the company.
The remaining 40% of the company is owned by current and former employees, franchise owners, mutual funds and individual investors. Many long-time franchisees have ownership stakes in the company, most notably the four Papa John’s ambassadors who have held stakes for more than 20 years. These founding franchisees hold shares worth millions of dollars, and they often contribute to the operations and decision-making of the company.
Papa John’s also has a partnership with financial service company T. Rowe Price, which helps Papa John’s finance expansion and new initiatives across the globe. In addition to providing financing, T. Rowe Price also owns a portion of the company.
Overall, the ownership of Papa John’s is widely varied. While Schnatter is the central figure and major owner, there is quite a bit of corporate and individual ownership throughout the company. With the help of John Schnatter and other corporate partners, Papa John’s continues to expand and grow its operations.
