With over 330 million active users, Reddit is one of the largest and most popular websites in the world. But who actually owns it?
The social media website was co-founded by Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian in 2005 and acquired by Conde Nast Publications in 2006. Today, Reddit is majority-owned by Advance Publications, with a majority stake held by Steve Huffman, who is currently the CEO.
Other investors in Reddit include Marc Andreessen, Y Combinator, Ron Conway and Peter Thiel. In addition, some of Reddit’s employees also own a small portion of the company.
Reddit has also been backed by various venture capital firms and entertainment companies such as MTV Networks, Warner Bros. and Comcast. In 2019, Tencent, one of the largest companies in China, acquired a 7.5% stake in Reddit.
Reddit is also a public company, which means that anybody can invest in it through stock exchanges. However, because of its complicated ownership structure, Reddit remains closely held.
Overall, it is clear that Reddit is an incredibly complex company with a lot of ownership. While Advance Publications holds the majority stake, it is clear that many other entities have a financial interest in the company’s success.
