T-Mobile is a telecommunications company owned by Deutsche Telekom, with headquarters in Bellevue, Washington. Founded in 1994, the company is based in Germany with operations in the United States and Europe. They are the third largest wireless telecom provider in the United States, with over 85 million customers.
In 2013, Deutsche Telekom agreed to sell a majority stake in T-Mobile to American telecoms giant AT&T. The deal was challenged by US regulators and eventually dropped after it was clear the merger would harm competition. Following the failed merger, T-Mobile received a $3 billion payment from AT&T and the company was free to pursue their own destiny.
Since then, T-Mobile has rapidly grown to become a competitive wireless network. In April 2018, they announced their “Un-carrier” campaign which included a range of services to attract customers. These included unlimited data, no contracts, and low-cost phones. As of 2020, T-Mobile offers 5G service and plans to become the first company in the US with an all 5G network.
T-Mobile’s ownership structure is still largely controlled by Deutsche Telekom, with a 73 percent stake in the company. Other stakeholders include SoftBank and BASF Venture Capital. T-Mobile’s shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange, making the company public.
Despite its German ownership, T-Mobile remains a leader in the US telecom market and has continued to grow, largely due to their focus on customer service and innovative services.
