The National Basketball Association, commonly known as the NBA, is a worldwide professional basketball league owned by thirty teams. Established in 1946, it is one of the four major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada.
The NBA is headquartered in New York City. The league is governed by the Board of Governors, which is comprised of the thirty team owners. The owners are the individuals who invested in building their franchise towards success.
The current league commissioner is Adam Silver, the former chief executive of NBA Entertainment. His duties include overseeing the operations and enforcing rules governing the league.
Each team owner makes his or her decisions about team operations, signings, trades, hiring and firing of personnel, etc. Within the NBA, there are four primary levels of ownership: the majority owner, the governors, the investors and the partners. The majority owner typically holds majority of the team stakes and acting as the head of the franchise. The governors are usually elected by the members of the franchise and they have a direct influence over the decisions taken by the majority owner. The investors are usually businesses or organizations who are interested in investing in the franchise and have a say in the team’s decisions. Last but not least, the partners are the people who are part owners of the franchise but are not involved in decision making.
In short, the National Basketball League is owned by the thirty different franchisees of the teams. While each team owner is ultimately responsible for the success or failure of their team, it is also depicted as a single entity since all the teams in the league work towards a common objective – to win an NBA championship title.
