The United States Football League (USFL) is a defunct American football league that began play in 1983 and ceased play in 1985. Despite its short lifespan, the USFL had a large impact on the landscape of professional football in America, as it was the first league to challenge the NFL’s monopoly over professional football. The league had a large amount of financial backing, including from some of the biggest names in all of sports, such as Donald Trump, who was the owner of the New Jersey Generals.
Though the USFL is widely believed to be defunct, the league still technically exists, as a legal entity. The league office is still active, and the USFL even held a draft in 2016. However, due to the league’s closure, there is no one that currently owns the USFL. No single person or entity owns the league, as when the USFL closed in 1985, the league still had hundreds of millions of dollars in debts. The league had so much debt that the USFL was eventually forced to file for bankruptcy in 1986.
Despite having declared bankruptcy and no longer actively operating, the USFL has been able to maintain its status as an active league, although it is not actively playing or competing. The league’s current owners are unknown, and were last publicly reported in 1985. As the USFL is no longer actively operating, it is not possible to determine who currently owns the league.
