WhatsApp is the world’s most popular social media messaging app, with over 1.5 billion active users. As a result, it has become a major part of our lives and is used by millions of people each day to communicate with family and friends.
The app was founded by Jan Koum and Brian Acton in 2009 and has since been acquired by Facebook in 2014. Since then, the two founders have gone on to found a new venture, Signal, and become billionaires. But who actually owns WhatsApp?
The answer is Facebook. While WhatsApp was founded by Koum and Acton, the company was eventually acquired by Facebook. The social media giant paid $19 billion for the messaging app, making it one of the most expensive acquisitions in tech history.
Currently, Facebook owns WhatsApp, although the messaging app still operates as an independent platform. However, the news and blog website, Wired, recently reported that WhatsApp’s CEO and co-founder, Will Cathcart, does have some influence. The website suggests that Cathcart has been pushing for new features and a focus on privacy, which would benefit users of the messaging app.
In essence, WhatsApp is owned by Facebook, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t making its own impact on the tech industry. With its focus on user privacy and its impressive international reach, it continues to be a major player in the communication market.
