YouTube is owned by Google, a subsidiary of parent company Alphabet. Google acquired YouTube in 2006 for $1.65 billion in a stock-for-stock transaction. At the time, YouTube had 50 million active users and 48 hours of new video added daily.
In March 2019, Google LLC President Sundar Pichai announced YouTube had more than two billion logged-in users each month. That same month, Alphabet reported YouTube’s revenue totaled $15.15 billion in 2018, a 36% increase compared to 2017. The firm also stated Alphabet had generated $37.8 billion in total revenues.
YouTube’s market dominance and financial stability have enabled the platform to become one of the leading sources of on-demand video streaming. In 2019, Bloomberg News reported YouTube had become the most popular streaming service in the United States ahead of rivals Netflix, Hulu and Prime Video.
The video-streaming platform has also emerged as a potential platform for gamers. In February 2019, Alphabet announced it would increase its investment in gaming videos on YouTube to build an online video-gaming community. Additionally, the company stated it would expand its monetization endeavors for gaming content on YouTube and create a subscription service for viewers to watch games live.
Despite its success, YouTube has become the subject of criticism in recent years. The platform has been accused of disseminating false information, failing to protect its users’ privacy and acting as a platform for copyright infringement. In response, YouTube has created initiatives to combat false information and strives to protect its users’ privacy.
