Beetlejuice is a 1988 American stop motion-live action comedy-fantasy film directed by Tim Burton and written by Michael McDowell and Warren Skaaren about a deceased couple who try to haunt the new occupants of their former home. The film stars Michael Keaton in the title role as a ghostly conman, Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis as a recently deceased couple, and Winona Ryder as a living teenaged girl who Beetlejuice opportunistically attempts to marry.
The character of Beetlejuice was voiced and performed by Michael Keaton, who was cast in the role shortly after production began. While Keaton had often played comedic roles, the role of Beetlejuice was his first in a horror comedy. Keaton reportedly felt the role was more than just a "Saturday morning cartoon," and he brought a wide range of physical comedy to the role. His performance was generally well-received by critics, and garnered him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Musical.
Beetlejuice also featured a number of a theatrical and televisual celebrities in supporting and background roles, such as Jeffrey Jones (as beetlejuice’s nemesis, Charles Deetz), Glenn Shadix (as his butler, Otho), Catherine O’Hara (as the Deetz’s nanny, Delia), and Sylvia Sidney (a mutual friend of both Lydia and Beetlejuice).
The character of Beetlejuice has gone on to become a cultural icon, spawning a cartoon series, two sequels, and a Broadway musical starring Tony Award-nominated actor Alex Brightman.
