Catwoman is one of the most popular characters in comic books as well as in film and television. Created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane in 1940, she has been a mainstay of the Batman mythos since her introduction, playing a crucial role in the Caped Crusader’s battle on crime. In the past, many actresses have donned the skin-tight suit in order to portray the mischievous thief, many of whom have left their mark on the role.
Lee Meriwether was the first actor to don the catsuit in a feature-length film, playing the role in the 1966 classic Batman movie. While Meriwether is well remembered for her performance, her portrayal has been criticized for having a campy edge that does not reflect the darker character overtones in later adaptations.
In 1992, Michelle Pfeiffer famously reprised the role in Batman Returns, solidifying her as one of the most notorious Catwomans in pop culture. Not only did she become well-known for her sultry performance, but her intricate costume design remains one of the most iconic looks in comic book history.
Arguably one of the most famous depictions of Catwoman is that of Halle Berry in the 2004 movie Catwoman. While the film fared poorly with audiences and critics, it nonetheless ensured that Berry’s name is now synonymous with Catwoman. Her two-piece leather outfit was more faithful to the comic book costume than its predecessors, featuring a cowl and goggles for a more contemporary look.
More recently, Anne Hathaway portrayed Catwoman in the Christopher Nolan-directed Dark Knight Rises. Her performance was met with universal applause, perfectly balancing a fun and flirty interpretation of the character with a hint of menace. Hathaway’s Catwoman was able to gracefully deliver the subtle complexity of Selina Kyle’s inner turmoil, truly making her a force to be reckoned with.
As one of the most renowned characters not just in comics but in popular culture, Catwoman has been featured in a number of live-action films over the years. From Lee Meriwether to Anne Hathaway, each of these women has left an indelible mark on their generations’ perception of the iconic character.
