Star Wars is a beloved sci-fi franchise that has enchanted audiences around the world since its original theatrical release in 1977. One of the most beloved characters from the films is the lovable Wookiee, Chewbacca. Chewbacca is a loyal friend to Han Solo and serves as the ship’s mechanic for the Millennium Falcon. Chewbacca was first seen in the original trilogy and then again in the prequel trilogy and currently in the sequel trilogy movies.
Chewbacca is played by the football-player-turned-actor Peter Mayhew, who was born in London. Mayhew and his parents moved to Texas when he was 18 months old and that is where his height of 7’3" was discovered. He eventually moved back to London and was cast as Chewbacca after director George Lucas saw some photographs of Mayhew that had been sent to him.
Mayhew has remained the face of Chewbacca over the years, and he has become a bit of a celebrity in his own right. He has made appearances in conventions and charity fundraising events, often wearing his Chewbacca costume. He has also written a book, Growing Up Bigfoot – My Life as Chewbacca, in which he talks about his life growing up in Texas, his beloved Star Wars fans, and cherished memories of playing Chewbacca.
This year, Mayhew, who is now 72 years old, had to step away from the character of Chewbacca, though he served as a consultant, because his mobility limitations. Finnish actor Joonas Suotamo, who is 6’11" tall, has since taken on the role and will be playing Chewbacca in the upcoming Star Wars installments. Mayhew remains an active supporter of the franchise, still playing a major role in the fandom and its events.
