Darth Maul is one of the most iconic characters in the entire Star Wars saga, and his iconic make-up and menacing double-bladed lightsaber made him an instant hit with fans. The character was famously portrayed by Ray Park in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.
Ray Park is a Scottish stunt performer and actor who trained in martial arts from a young age. Park first gained recognition for his role in the 1997 action movie Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. His first major acting role was as Toad in the 2000 superhero film X-Men.
For his portrayal of Darth Maul, Park worked to develop a fighting style that was intimidating and realistic. He trained in martial arts and sword fight choreography specifically to fit his character. Park also worked with a speech therapist to perfect the character’s signature Sith growl.
Park returned to the Star Wars universe in Solo: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars Rebels. He went uncredited for both roles, which is typical for stunt performers. With his performance as Darth Maul, Ray Park continues to earn the admiration of Star Wars fans around the world.
