Edward Scissorhands is a 1990 American romantic dark fantasy film directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp. The film tells the story of an artificial man named Edward, an unfinished creation who has scissors for hands. Edward is taken in by a suburban family and falls in love with their teenage daughter Kim.
Johnny Depp stars in the lead role as Edward Scissorhands. He had previously worked with Tim Burton for the movie Edward Scissorhands, in which he plays the titular character. Depp was cast based on Burton’s belief that the actor would make the role his own.
Depp was an instant hit among fans, because of his portrayal of the sensitive, sweet yet vulnerable Edward Scissorhands. His performance earned him numerous award nominations and wins, as well as an Academy Award nomination. Depp’s performance is considered one of his greatest roles, and has influenced today’s popular culture.
The film also stars Winona Ryder as Kim, Dianne Wiest as Peg Boggs, and Alan Arkin as Bill Boggs. In addition, the film features innumerable cameos from celebrity actors and personalities, like Rosie O’Donnell, Dick Van Dyke, Gattaca’s Ethan Hawke, and horror author Stephen King.
Production of the film took three years to complete, and its visuals received much critical acclaim. It was a huge commercial success and is now considered a cult classic. Edward Scissorhands is regularly listed among the best of Burton’s works, and Johnny Depp’s career-defining role.
