Goose, otherwise known as Lt. Nick Bradshaw, was a crucial character in the 1986 hit movie Top Gun. The role of Goose was played by actor Anthony Edwards, who has since become a successful director and producer.
Goose is the RIO (Radar Intercept Officer) of Maverick (Tom Cruise). The two become friends throughout the movie, as Maverick helps Goose develop into an outstanding pilot with much savvy that had formerly been untapped.
Anthony Edwards studied with a private flight instructor for several weeks to prepare for the role. Time magazine even wrote that he took flight lessons so often that by the end of filming "he was more of an aviator than any of his castmates."
The friendship between Maverick and Goose comes to a heartbreaking end when Goose is killed during the movie’s climactic flight scene. Edwards was not happy with the scene and was worried that it would taint his image, as the audience had come to like his character by that stage. However, the scene remains one of the movie’s most memorable moments and a tribute to the strong bond between Maverick and Goose.
After Top Gun, Edwards starred in other successful movies, including Zodiac, Revenge of the Nerds, Holy Man, and The Forgotten. He has also earned awards for directing projects for television, including episodes of ER and other series. Meanwhile, Goose’s memory lives on as one of the most lovable characters from Top Gun.
