One of the most iconic and memorable characters in all of film history, Dr. Hannibal Lecter was made famous by Anthony Hopkins with his chilling portrayal in the 1991 horror classic, The Silence of the Lambs. Since then, several other actors have taken on the role of Hannibal and breathed life into Lecter’s malevolence in films, television shows, and even video games.
In 2001, the Hannibal Lecter character was brought to life once again in the critically acclaimed sequel, Hannibal. In this film, Hopkins reprised his role as Lecter, but this time Academy Award Winner, Gary Oldman also joined in. Much like in The Silence of the Lambs, Oldman portrayed Lecter as a cunning and manipulative character whose actions were driven by a darker side.
In 2006 and 2007, the character of Hannibal was remade for television in the NBC series, Hannibal. This time, the role was filled by actor Mads Mikkelsen, who provided a truly mesmerizing performance. Mikkelson played Lecter as a cunning and calculating predator who knew how to manipulate his surroundings.
Finally, the character of Hannibal Lecter hasn’t been relegated only to film and television. In 2013, a new video game, "Hannibal Rising", was released, with the character being voiced by Maurice La Marche. La Marche infuses the character with a smaller, yet still powerful presence.
In conclusion, Hannibal Lecter has proven time and time again to be one of the most terrifying characters in all of film and TV. The character has been portrayed by some of the most acclaimed actors of the modern era and continues to capture the hearts and minds of fans with every new portrayal.
