Herman Munster was the iconic patriarch of the iconic horror family, the Munsters. Actor Fred Gwynne played the character in the TV Series The Munsters, which ran from 1964-1966.
Born Fredrick Hubbard Gwynne in New York City, Gwynne studied English Literature at Harvard University. After completing his studies, he furthered his education at the Yale School of Drama. It was during his time at Yale that Gwynne developed a love for acting. After a few Broadway stints, Gwynne moved to Los Angeles and began his Hollywood career.
Gwynne originally auditioned for the role of Lily Munster. After the director saw his audition tape, he instead decided to cast Gwynne as the iconic patriarch, Herman Munster (originally named "Harve"). His performance as Herman was the highlight of the show, with Gwynne creating a unique, endearing character.
Gwynne became a huge star due to his role in The Munsters. This fame further opened doors for Gwynne and he went onto appear in other projects such as the movie "My Cousin Vinny" and the TV series "Law & Order". Despite his later accomplishments, Gwynne will always be remembered as the loveable dad Herman Munster.
