The iconic character of Morticia Addams was first brought to life by actress Carolyn Jones. Jones had a career spanning five decades and appeared in a variety of films, stage productions and television programs.
Jones made her debut as Morticia Addams in the television adaptation of four episodes of The Addams Family in the early 1960s. With her dark hair, ghoulishly pale skin and blood red lips, Jones created a perfect image of the Addams Family matriarch.
In 1991 the role was later taken over by the actress Anjelica Huston. The character was adapted for a feature film version of The Addams Family which proved to be a great success. Huston’s portrayal of Morticia was darker and more understated than Jones’ version, emphasizing the character’s sorrowful and melancholic air.
Finally, Lizzy Caplan stepped in to play young Morticia in the re-imagining of the story in 2019 called ‘The Addams Family’. Caplan conveyed a different version of the character, focusing on Morticia’s spooky wit rather than her gloomy persona.
Although different actresses have taken on the role of Morticia Addams over the years, the character endures in the public imagination as a beloved symbol of the macabre and stoic humour which is, and always will be, a signature of The Addams Family.
