Shrek is a lovable green ogre who stars in the animated movie franchise of the same name. Shrek first appeared in 2001 in the original movie, which was directed by Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson. The character of Shrek was voiced by Mike Myers, the popular comedian and actor who is best known for his role in the “Austin Powers” movies.
Myers was originally cast in the role of Shrek because he was considered to be an ideal candidate to voice the character. His distinct voice and comedic style lent itself perfectly to the character of Shrek. With a combination of fast talking, sarcasm and a deep, booming laugh, Myers’ Shrek was both beloved and instantly recognizable.
The Shrek franchise went on to become a massive success, beginning with the first movie, which won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. It spawned four sequels and grossed more than $3.5 billion in the global box office. The success of the movie can largely be attributed to Myers, who has also won multiple awards for his work as Shrek, including a BAFTA Award for Best Male Performance in an Animated Feature.
To this day, Mike Myers is the only actor to have voiced the iconic character of Shrek. Other notable actors, such as Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz, have co-starred in the movies alongside Myers, but none have taken over his role as the lovable green ogre. Despite the fact that the last movie in the franchise came out in 2010, Myers continues to be synonymous with the character of Shrek, establishing him as one of the most beloved characters in modern animated movie history.
