In the 1985 movie classic The Goonies, Sloth is a beloved character fondly remembered by many thirty years later. Sloth was played by the late actor John Matuszak, who was a former professional football player.
In the movie, Sloth is a lovable giant with a disfigured face due to surgery to separate appendages that had grown together during his infancy. Despite his physical abnormalities, Sloth is a gentle and kind-hearted being that befriends Chunk and helps the Goonies find the treasure.
Matuszak was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After he graduated from college, he went on to have a successful career in professional football. He was part of the Oakland Raiders team that won Super Bowl XV in 1981. After retirement from football, he decided to make the switch to acting.
For the role of Sloth, Matuszak donned heavy prosthetic makeup that required six to eight hours to apply each day. Despite the discomfort of the makeup, Matuszak demonstrated incredible commitment to the role, and this dedication was rewarded with an avalanche of fan letters. Matuszak embraced his newfound fame and used it to travel around the world, meet with fans, and eventually star in several other comedies.
John Matuszak passed away in 1989, just four years after the release of The Goonies. His charming and lovable performance as Sloth will be remembered and cherished by fans of The Goonies for years to come.
