Robbie Coltrane plays the beloved character of Hagrid in the Harry Potter movies. Coltrane is a Scottish actor who is known for his many memorable roles in British television and cinema. He is most beloved for bringing the giant half-giant gamekeeper and Keeper of Keys and Grounds of Hogwarts Albus Dumbledore entrusted with the care of Harry Potter to life.
Coltrane first appeared in the year 2000 as Hagrid in the very first movie "Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone". He was then in the following movies: "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)," "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)," "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)," "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007)," "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)," and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (2011)."
Coltrane, who stands at over 6-feet tall, was the perfect fit for the role of Hagrid. His long beard and solemn, gravelly voice lent themselves perfectly to the character of a gentle giant who is secretly passionate about magical creatures. Coltrane’s Hagrid is a warm and gentle character who takes pleasure in protecting Harry and his friends, even at great personal risk.
Coltrane has said in an interview that after playing Hagrid, he is often stopped on the streets by fans, who never fail to talk to him about the movies. “It’s very nice when people come up to me and say, ‘I’ve named my son after you.’” Coltrane also credits being part of the Harry Potter franchise as having changed his life.
Robbie Coltrane’s performance as Hagrid is one of the reasons why the Harry Potter saga is so beloved by fans.
