in Halloween
Halloween is one of the most enduringly popular slasher horror films ever made, and it’s impossible to even think of the franchise without its villain, Michael Myers. This masked, unstoppable serial killer is so iconic that his face is literally synonymous with the horror genre. But who has played Michael Myers throughout the various movies in the franchise?
In the original 1978 Halloween, the role of Michael Myers was played by Nick Castle. Castle was actually the film’s choreographer, and he was cast as Michael principally because director John Carpenter already knew he could move well — a critical trait for the character. Castle reportedly spent just three days shooting the movie, and made such an impact that the credit for Michael Myers was initially listed as "The Shape".
He was replaced in the 1981 sequel, Halloween II, with actor Dick Warlock, who had previously worked on films like The Fog and Escape From New York. Warlock was directed to bring more menace to the character and played quite aggressively, performing his own stunts in knife scenes and even slamming his own head into a post.
In the various sequels that followed in the ’90s, Michael Bowser appeared uncredited in Halloween 4 and 5, Don Shanks appeared in Halloween 6, and George Wilbur starred in Halloween 4 and Halloween 6. Wilbur in particular had previously worked with horror film superstar Kane Hodder on horror films like Silent Night, Deadly Night 4.
The most recent Halloween movies, made in 2018 and 2019, were directed by David Gordon Green, and featured James Jude Courtney as Michael Myers. Courtney’s portrayal of Michael was unique in that he blended together different aspects of all the previous actors to create a new, intensely menacing version of the character. He was cast mainly because of his physicality — Courtney is an experienced stuntman — and he worked closely with stunt coordinator Andy Bennett to perform his own stunts during the movie, which made Michael Myers’ movements even more menacing and believable.
