Eddie Redmayne is the actor who plays Newt Scamander in the Fantastic Beasts franchise. He is an Academy Award-winning British actor, known for his roles in The Theory of Everything, The Danish Girl, and Les Miserables, among many others.
Redmayne won an Oscar for Best Actor in 2015 for his leading performance in The Theory of Everything as Stephen Hawking. He was also nominated for Best Actor in 2016 for his portrayal of Lili Elbe in The Danish Girl.
In 2016, Redmayne portrayed Newt Scamander in the first installment of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. He reprised the role for the sequels, which include Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and Fantastic Beasts: The Rise of Grindelwald. The series is based on J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world created in her successful book series, Harry Potter. As a magizoologist, Scamander travels the world to find magical creatures.
In addition to his Fantastic Beasts roles, Redmayne has appeared in several other films including Fantastic Four and Jupiter Ascending. He is also the voice of the white rabbit in Disney’s Alice in Wonderland and appeared in My Week with Marilyn and The Good Shepherd.
Redmayne previously participated in theater, appearing in The Goat or Who is Sylvia? and Twelfth Night before his breakout Hollywood roles. He also won a BAFTA TV Award for his work in the British drama The Pillars of the Earth.
Redmayne’s other awards include SAG Awards, Satellite Awards, and Independent Spirit Awards. He was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2015. Redmayne is married to Hannah Bagshawe and the couple has two children.
