The Grinch is a beloved holiday movie character created by Dr. Seuss and portrayed on the big screen in two live-action films, one released in 2000 and the most recent version in 2018. Both films feature Jim Carrey as The Grinch, a bitter, heartless creature who steals Christmas from the Whos of Whoville.
The first Grinch movie, released in 2000 and directed by Ron Howard, marked Carrey’s first attempt at doing a voice-only performance. Even though this version is still much-loved by fans, it didn’t quite capture the essence of the Grinch that Dr. Seuss originally wrote about.
The 2018 version of the beloved holiday favorite was directed by Yarrow Cheney and Scott Mosier and stars Benedict Cumberbatch as The Grinch. The film tells the story of the Grinch’s journey, showing the evolution of his lonesome and selfish ways. Cumberbatch’s performance as the iconic Grinch is much better received by fans than Carrey’s, with some saying he captures the mischievous spirit of Dr. Seuss’s beloved character perfectly.
Although Carrey and Cumberbatch have each left a lasting impression on the holiday favorite, neither has been announced as part of the upcoming Grinch animated series that’s in the works. The series will be focused on the world of Whoville and its inhabitants and no casting information has been officially announced.
No matter who plays The Grinch in the future, it’s sure to bring the same holiday spirit that the character has for over five decades. The Grinch remains an evergreen holiday favorite for many and the excitement for the new series continues to build regardless of who will be The Grinch.
