Movie Series
The Penguin, otherwise known as Oswald Cobblepot, is a recurring villain in the Batman film series. The character is depicted as a criminal mastermind with a Machiavellian practicality and a fondness for high-tech weapons and gadgets.
The first actor to portray the criminal mastermind was Burgess Meredith in the 1966 film Batman. Meredith’s portrayal of The Penguin was praised for its deadpan delivery and comical approach to playing such a menacing villain.
Next, actor Danny Devito portrayed the criminal mastermind in Tim Burton’s 1992 movie Batman Returns. Devito’s take on The Penguin was drastically different from previous iterations. In Burton’s film, the character was portrayed as a grotesquely deformed, yet highly intelligent and calculating criminal mastermind.
The third actor to portray The Penguin was Robin Lord Taylor in the 2014-2019 Fox-DC Comics TV series Gotham. Taylor portrayed a young and ambitious version of The Penguin, suggesting a future darker side of society as the character slowly came to power. Throughout the series, we saw Oswald Cobblepot slowly rise to become one of the most powerful, and feared people in Gotham.
Finally, Colin Farrell played the supervillain in the 2021 film The Batman. This version of The Penguin is a ruthless and calculating crime lord who will stop at nothing to take control of Gotham City.
Regardless of which iteration of The Penguin audiences watch, all four actors added their own spin to the character, making him a fan favorite of the Batman series.
