As one of the many villains of the iconic Batman franchise, The Riddler has a long and varied history. While the character has appeared in every version of the franchise since its very beginnings in the 1940s, various actors have stepped up to bring the character to life.
The Riddler was first introduced in 1948 as a younger character (portrayed by actor Conrad Veidt) and in the 1950s and 60s the character was played by the legendary Cesar Romero. The character was then played by actor John Astin in the 1960s television series.
In the 1989 movie, Tim Burton cast the highly acclaimed Michael Keaton in the role of the Riddler. Keaton brought to life the frighteningly clever villain that fans would remember for many years.
The Riddler was brought back to life in 1995 with the release of Batman Forever. Director Joel Schumacher cast Jim Carrey to play the role. Carrey, known for his zany comedic style, brought a delightful and zany energy to the character.
The franchise went through some hard times in the 2000s with films such as Batman & Robin and Batman: The Dark Knight Strikes Again, but The Riddler was still a part of the cast. He was played by Clancy Brown in The Dark Knight Strikes Again and by Daniel Pranga in Batman & Robin.
The Riddler appeared again in the recent Dark Knight trilogy of films, and the new films featured a much darker and more menacing take on the character. Tom Hardy was cast as the character in The Dark Knight Rises, though he had a relatively small role.
Most recently, Jonah Hill brought this enigmatic villain back to life in 2021’s The Batman as a much younger and more inexperienced version of The Riddler.
From its very beginnings to the most current films, The Riddler has been brought to life by some of the most ideal and iconic actors from cinema. With such a vast and dynamic history, this beloved character of the Batman franchise is sure to live on for many years to come.
